Our Ethos

For many years we have run educational visits in the farm for all ages of children. We are very passionate about sharing this amazing environment with the next generation.

The 60 place nursery is for children aged between 3 months and 5 years and is open Monday - Friday for 51 weeks of the year. Our opening hours are 7.30am - 6.00pm.

The nursery is purpose-built to allow children to be at one with nature and the outdoors. The nursery has three rooms, each catering for different age groups. All of these rooms lead out to a large private, secure outdoor play area so children can choose where they want to play and therefore learn all year round. There is a large canopy that ensures that children can play outside in all weathers and we also provide wet weather clothing so the children can play happily in the rain or snow, as they wish.

We also have a huge field just beyond the children’s garden where the children tend their fruit and vegetables in the raised beds, care for the nursery chickens and enjoy endless forest school activities.

There are other animals on the farm, including the nursery pygmy goats and the children are involved in their care and help with their daily routine. This care for nature and animals is absolutely core to our ethos of a loving, nurturing environment where the children in our care can flourish.

The children regularly walk around the farm so they can enjoy, and learn about the seasonal changes of the farm, both crops and wildlife, and purely enjoy the space and fresh air that we have to offer. We have quad cross country buggies so even the smallest of our children can see this on this on the farm. Take a look at our On the farm page to see more about this.

Come Visit Us

We strongly believe in play based learning. We provide an environment, everyday, where children can develop through play.

We know each child as the individual that they are and through this we set up activities to progress their development. We do not pressurise the children, rather we provide a fun stimulating environment where a love for learning is developed.

Our Pre-School. Our Family. Our Community

To share a child’s development and daily diary with parents we use an app called Parentzone. This means that parents can see photos and videos of their children through the day, receive learning records, meal updates and any other information.

We know that our members of staff are the most important part of the nursery. We have a wonderful, diverse team who truly care about early years and provide a caring and inspiring teaching and learning environment for all the children in our care.

At Molescroft Farm we fully understand that choosing the right childcare for your child is a daunting experience but rest assured that the needs of your child are always our top priority.

What We Do

Environment

We are always trying to find ways to be as environmentally friendly as possible with reduce, re-use and recycling being at the heart of our nursery ethos, whether it be through using as little plastic as possible or using recycled natural product all through the nursery. You can see more about how we implement this on our Community page.

Food

Our nursery cook prepares amazing nutritious meals for the children every day on site. None of the food that we serve is processed, and sugar and salt are not added. We don’t serve puddings, rather a seasonal variety of fruit salads, smoothies and lassis. Snacks are savoury to avoid sugar sitting on the children’s teeth. Food is sourced locally where possible and from our own raised beds. See Sample Menu.

Play

We strongly believe in play based learning. We provide an environment, everyday where children can develop through play. We know each child as the individual that they are and through this we set up activities to progress their development. We do not pressurise the children, rather we provide a fun stimulating environment where a love for learning is developed.

Learning

We have many extra lessons, which the children love taking part in, from French, science, gardening club and music. We have educational visits up to Frith Farm, which is a veg box scheme which runs only a couple of field away on the farm.

Outdoor learning is fun!

Just a small insight into how the children learn at nursery through 'In the moment planning'.

'Play is often talked about as if were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play really is the work of Childhood'

We have been exploring maps over the last few weeks which has led us onto lots of adventures and amazing learning opportunities!
Starting from the children asking for help to draw a map to the Orchard, through an amazing journey of learning and discovery:
● What does a map help us with?
● How do we read a map?
● Noticing features in our environment on the map
● How to draw our own maps
● Read childrens books from home which explored maps
● Read new stories which included maps and journeys to new places
● Reading the farm signs as they were coming and going from preschool with parents so that they could help us build our maps and learn directions
● Learning directional language
● Drawing correct shapes needed for the environmental features
● Drawing lines/arrows to link our environmental features to show direction
● Thought about what supplies we may need for different adventures
● The children wrote the lists with appropriate support for their level of writing
● The children had to discuss the safety measures needed for the adventure

Then....our imaginations kicked in and we turned our already amazing environment into somewhere new taking inspiration from the books we've read so that we could:
● Trek across a hot desert
● Find shelter from sandstorms
● Swim with dolphins across the ocean
● Drive a ship when the ocean got too rough
● Climbed mountains carefully
● Balanced across bridges of crocodile infested waters....so brave!

We then knew we were close so the children knew to look for the "X marks the spot!"
Out came the shovels from our backpacks....
We found TREASURE!

So exciting we then had our snack to celebrate around the treasure.
What the children didn't realise is that they were learning the entire time, it was their thoughts that organised every part of the journey, they worked together as a team and what a fantastic reward for all that 'play'.

Thank you again Katy for bringing our beautiful outdoors indoors for our preschool children to enjoy.
Everything Katy has painted onto the preschool entrance hall wall lives and grows in the fields surrounding the nursery where the children explore every day.

We have had to take the incredibly difficult decision to cancel Open Farm Sunday this year due to the uncertainty around Covid-19 restrictions moving forward, and the safety of everybody involved 😔

We are so sad as it is the highlight of the year but we do not feel we have any alternative. Next year will be the best ever as we will have so many new ideas #keeplookingforward
